The winter session of Indoor games championship of JSHM, started with a bang in Pavilion stadium, Fatehgunj on 25th February’2012.

Loud thuds of feet hitting the wood and crank of smashes soon filled the auditorium. The spirits were soaring and the enthusiastic participants let everyone know that they meant business. The cheer and slogans of audience added spice to the ambience.

Students from different batches and JSHM staff took part in the games. On one side it was the fast sport of Table Tennis, where the light ping pong was getting whacked by graphite rackets to all corners. On the other side the shuttle cock was getting placed to immaculate perfection.

The event started with badminton singles, where Ms. Rajvi Kiri from the 1st Year IGNOU batch won the Badminton Ladies’ Singles Title by defeating Krushika Mehta of Cezar Ritz Higher Diploma batch. Mr.  Madhusudhan G.from the Cesa’r Ritz second year batch won the Badminton Men’s Singles title by defeating Mr. Srinath Achar. The Badminton doubles saw Mr.Srinath Achar and Mr. Gautam Shastry claiming the title by defeating Mr. Robbie Mathew and Mr. Balu John Maris. It was an all faculty final.

There were many light hearted moments too. The compulsive need of Madhusudan to argue at every line call, invention of a new game called Bad-Tennis were just some of the lighter moments. Be sure to watch these videos.

The day winded up at 04.00 PM. It was a day full of fun and excitement. The day was a well-deserved break for both the students and faculty from the hectic academic schedule.

Teachers Lecture or Participative class?

January 27, 2012 by admin · 1 Comment
Filed under: Quality education at JSHM

I certainly know of students who prefer to sit in classes where faculty does all the talking, however most students prefer to participate in discussions.

These class discussions help students in a many ways:

  • Increases interest level in the subject
  • Students stay more focused because they anticipate being asked to answer.
  • Helps one to become better communicators.
  • Improves overall confidence.
  • It is well established fact that students who express themselves better get better offers.

At JSHM we strongly believe that the best delivery of education happen only when there is two way communication. Could we call it communication when the receivers do not even have the chance to give feedbacks?

Evaluation is a process of measuring what has the students learned. How could an instructor evaluate his or her students when he or she is the only one talking? Written tests are also forms of evaluation but they are not complete at all. Many evaluation types are needed in order to come up with the most reliable source.

Evaluation is important because it will give answers to the following questions: Were the objectives of the lesson or chapter achieved? Was the teacher effective? Did the students learn what they needed to?

The active way of teaching has kept Jindal School of Hotel Management move fast when it comes to their educational system improvement. Having unemployable students is the worst liability an institute could have.

The onus of active communication is not entirely the Teachers. Without whole hearted participation from students, no good can be achieved. It is said that the fear of public speaking is next only to the fear of death. Classmates need to be sensitive to group members who have difficulty in communicating their ideas clearly.

Hospitality industry requires confident personals that have good communication skills. JSHM strives to mould every student into well groomed hospitality professionals. The class atmosphere helps in a big way in this development process.

In High Spirits !

One of the highlights of semester-3 studies at JSHM is the Beverage Studies  (B&B) course conducted by Mr. Robbie Mathew. A classroom aptly named “Martini” is where these classes are held.

Being in the dry state of Gujarat, many students have grown up with misconceived notions about beverages. They have also been fed on unnecessary hype through peers. Fortunately for them, they have Mr. Mathews, who guides them with his balanced outlook towards spirits.

Friends know of Robbie as the “Encyclopedias of beverages”. His passion rubs on other JSHMites too. There is never a dull moment at B&B classes here. The huge collection of bottles & labels at Institute is supplemented with even bigger personal collection of Mr. Mathews for students to benefit.

Over the years Robbie has kept on adding newer interactive methods of making these classes even more fun. Some activities that leave a lasting memory in the minds of wards are :

  • Wine tasting trip to Nasik
  • Bar set ups
  • Tea tasting sessions
  • Mocktail competitions

The spirits are always high at JSHM’s Bar & Beverage sessions.  It’s no surprise that most alumni regard these B & B sessions at Martini as the best classes ever.

With immense joy & pride, we broadcast that our Alumnus of winter 2009, Mr.Mahesh Gadvi has won the Employee of the Quarter award at Sofitel London Heathrow for the Quarter of July, August & September 2011.

The entire JSHM family is thrilled to hear this news.

Mahesh showed early, that he has the courage try uncharted territories & stick to his decisions. He was the only student from his batch to choose China as the destination for his second Internship. He again surprised many with his decision to pursue higher education after his stint in China.

His decision to persist with his own career choices is bearing fruit today.

We are sure that this is just the start of many more successes to come for Mahesh .

Navratri @ JSHM

Royal Room at Hotel Surya Palace was the venue to be on 30th September 2011. The royal ambience of the room was complemented by the glitter of traditionally dressed JSHMites. The Garba Songs & the Garba Ras ( Dance Form) filled the venue with  serene beauty.

Navratri (nine nights) is one of the greatest of Hindu festivals. It takes place at the beginning of October around harvest time and, as the name implies, this festival is celebrated for nine days. During this event the traditional dance form of “Garba” is played around a central lit lamp to the picture/statue of Goddess Amba. During Navratri, Vadodra – the cultural capital of Gujarat is the best place to perform or witness Garba.

Jindal School of Hotel Management, celebrated this auspicious occasion on the 30th September, 2011. All the students and faculty were dressed in colourful Gujarati outfits to celebrate the festival. Women were dressed charmingly in Chaniya Cholis and men were dressed traditionally in kurtas and pyjamas. The rhythmic dancing was too much to resist even for reluctant dancers & soon the entire JSHM family was performing the Garba Ras.

The event started off with a traditional aarti followed by Garba. The entire evening was full of energy as we danced to the Gujarati tunes. The event turned out to be a huge success as everybody gladly participated in the festivity.

The merriment ended with presenting of awards, Ms. Charvi Patel won the Best Dress Award, Ms. Margi Merchant and Mr. Pratik Mali won the Best Pair and;  Ms. Rajvi Kiri and Mr. Nikhil Makwana won the Best Dance. On the whole the evening was enjoyable and a great display of celebrations followed at JSHM.

Teacher’s day is celebrated is celebrated on the 5th of September every year. The day commemorates the birthday of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakhrishnan, a philosopher and a teacher par excellence, and his contribution towards Indian education system.

At Jindal School of Hotel Management we celebrated this joyous occasion with much joy and gratitude towards our teachers. The students were given an opportunity to put themselves in the shoes of different teachers and actually teach a class. This activity gave the students an insight about the importance of teachers and the responsibility of molding the minds of the young generation is immense. The student teachers were evaluated while they were teaching.

In the evening the college held a get together for the entire staff and students to celebrate Teacher’s day. The students had arranged games and activities for the get together. The event was a great success with even the teacher’s happily participating in the activities held for them.

To initiate the ceremony there was a speech referring to the special characteristics of each teacher and what every student would remember that teacher for.

The second year students presented a handmade card with wishes and memories of the time in JSHM in the card.

During this event the students got to know so much about the teacher’s which would be impossible to know during class. Mr. Srinath Achar won the game organized for the teachers, where he had to draw a picture of another teacher. He made a picture in 15 seconds and the creativity and imagination of his was worth applause.

The ceremony ended with the awards. Ms. Bindya Salat won the Best Student Teacher Award for the year 2011. Ms Stephanie Rodriguez, Mr. Supreet Bagga and Mr. Vandan Thakkar won the award for the most participative students from their batches respectively. All in all the day ended beautifully…!!!
